2027 Toyota Supra Mk6 Will Reportedly Sport Four Cylinders and Electric Assistance
With the fifth-generation Supra on its way out, nobody except a few individuals at Toyota know for certain what the future holds for this iconic nameplate. According to a recent scoop from Japanese publication Best Car, the sixth gen is expected to receive a smaller engine with a hybrid twist.

The cited publication understands that it's a 2.0-liter mill developed by Japan's largest automaker instead of BMW. Furthermore, the purported lump is understood to spawn two distinct flavors, of which the Supra Mk6 will reportedly get the high-output spec.

Best Car indicates 400 metric ponies and 500 Newton-meters of torque, meaning 395 mechanical horsepower and 369 pound-feet in American vernacular. Those numbers are very close to the BMW-sourced I6 of the outgoing Supra, which features no electric assistance whatsoever. On the other hand, the single-turbo sixer in question does make a bit more oomph in the A90 Final Edition.

Believed to arrive in dealer showrooms in 2027, the Supra Mk6 is apparently going the parallel hybrid route. Its electric motor is purportedly sandwiched between the automatic transmission and engine, albeit Best Car does not know if said automatic is Toyota's 10-speed unit or the ZF-supplied eighter of the fifth-gen Supra.

One also has to remember that Toyota has been waxing lyrically about simulated manual boxes for electric vehicles and hybrids. Finally, the last bit of information shared by the Japanese publication is rear-wheel drive rather than all-wheel drive.

While a 2.0-liter turbo with four cylinders arranged in a line may rub some peeps the wrong way, remember that plenty of people hated the Mk5 when it came out due to Toyota's reliance on BMW. On the other hand, the Mk6 could become Toyota's very first Supra with four pots only.

Announced in May 2024, the highly anticipated 2.0-liter turbo is a future-proofed motor developed with carbon-neutral fuels in mind. The racing version could be taken to a rumored 600 pferdstarke or 592 horsepower, meaning 300 ps or 296 hp per liter.

Almost half a year ago, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda announced that each of them would develop brand-specific powertrains, with Toyota choosing the inline design over boxers for Scooby and rotaries for Mazda. In addition to the aforementioned 2.0-liter turbo, Toyota is also developing a 1.5-liter turbo.

Disappointing may be the word that comes to mind if you're a six-cylinder loyalist. Be that as it may, consider that Toyota is playing the long game here, with Toyota keeping a close eye on fuel economy and emission regulations. With Euro 7 going into effect in July 2027 for light-duty vehicles, downsizing and hybridization are of utmost importance for achieving the new Euro 7 targets.

Does that mean the Supra Mk6 won't be as fun as the Supra Mk5? While that depends on what each one of us considers fun in a road-going car, make no mistake that going hybrid will result in more curb weight. For reference, the limited-run A90 Final Edition is rated at 1,528 kilograms (3,369 pounds).
