With the BMW M4 set to turn three years old next year, the time has come for the coupe to get a mid-cycle refresh.

Our photographers managed to capture BMW testing two M4 prototypes with the red model showing off the small facelift that will grace the sports car, while the white model hints at something a little more potent.

The lightly-camouflaged prototype that's finished in white appears to be a sportier, track-friendly model that could slot in between the regular M4 and M4 GTS. At the front, the prototype sports a prominent slip with a similar front fascia to that of the M4 GTS. The hood isn't as muscular as the one found on the M4 GTS, but still features a large bulge that isn't found on the current M4.

Both prototypes have camouflage around the headlights, indicating the M4 may gain full-LED units like the ones found on the M3. Interestingly, the white prototype is wearing a mismatched set of wheels with the rear design mimicking the ones found on the M4 GTS, hinting at the possibility of a new performance-oriented model.

At the rear, the white model is wearing an M Performance rear spoiler that is tucked away under some camouflage. The camouflaged rear end also hides OLED taillights, just like the red prototype.

The M4's facelift appear to be minor and purely cosmetic. The M3 just received mid-cycle refresh without any accompanying power increase, so we expect the M4 to soldier on with the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that pumps out 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque.

This isn't the first time we've seen BMW testing a sporty M4 as the automaker was caught testing an M4 wearing extreme aerodynamic parts at the Nurburgring last month.
